They constantly dealt with Natala's parents disapproving of their relationship - they didn't want their little princess to be with a scientist, of all things. After dealing with many years of disapproval, the late teenage couple eloped. They got married at the Justice Building without ever consulting their parents. The next day, they got the tragic news that Natala's mother died from a heart attack. Natala blamed the tradgedy on her relationship with Azric, and she assumed that the heart attack was caused by their daughter running away to get married. Distraught, Natala broke it off with Azric to spend time with her father. A year passed without Azric and Natala having any contact and their marriage was annulled. Azric had given them enough time to grieve, as he'd promised, but now was the time to fight for her. He wasn't going down without a fight. He sent her flowers every day, and it only took four days for her to talk to him. They reconnected, and found out what they'd done in the past year, and that night Natala invited him over to dinner with her father. It was a very formal occasion and, because her father was much more relaxed (Natala's mother had been the main voice in the disapprovement of the relationship), Natala and Azric finally got the approval they'd waited years for. They had a proper engagement, and the wedding was extravagent in one of District 5's best gardens. Natala found out a month later that she was pregnant, and in summer she gave birth to their first child, Dodie. Whilst Natala took care of Dodie at home, Azric worked harder than he ever had. After a lot of hard work, he was responsible for a revolutionary power source that changed life in Panem, and thus the family became well-respected. Not long after this, the Rylands had their second child, whom they named Jacelyn. From the very beginning, Natala and Azric knew she was going to be a problem child. They thought the first child would be the hardest to raise, but they were wrong. Jacelyn refused to do anything her parents told her to and was very stubborn. She went out of her way to disagree with everything they said, until they decided enough was enough. She was sent to live at her grandfather's house until they could handle her better. Jacelyn stayed there for six months until she got over her 'terrible twos', and a few weeks after she went back to her own household, she had a younger brother named Ridge. Having a younger brother really mellowed Jacelyn out. She wanted to play with him all the time, but to do that, she needed to eat all her vegetables first. Never a day went by where she didn't eat what was given to her. Ridge became her best friend from an early age, and no matter how hard her parents tried to make her get along with Dodie, they fought all the time. The reaping was a source of fear for the Rylands, but Jacelyn found it to be very exhilerating. She stood in the crowd eagerly, waiting for someone to get the opportunity to win and be famous in Panem. When she was 16, Jacelyn was reaped. She was shocked and terrified, and she felt hurt because no one volunteered for her. Not even her best friends. She would have volunteered for them. Jacelyn was put into an arena full of ice, snow, glaciers and penguin mutts. She stole a little knife from the Cornucopia and ran off into the white wonderland. She spent most of her first day constructing a snowy hideout in the ground. It was pretty cozy for the first night, but the Careers found her in the morning. Shaking and numb with cold, Jacelyn had no choice but to fight them. She stabbed at the District 4 girl while the other Careers surrounded here, but they were stunned when she easily took the D4 girl out. Jace was stunned, too, as she stared at the deep red blood oozing from the dead girl's face and melting the ice. She didn't think she could ever do it, but she'd survive another day. Deciding that it was best to have her on their side for the moment, Jacelyn became a temporary Career. She did feel remorse late at night when she thought about the D4 girl's family. Hoping that the cameras were on her, and that the Careers were sleeping soundly, she whispered, "Sorry," to the starry sky. The days passed by in a blur, and with fewer tributes left, the careers started branching off. The boy from 1 was the first to break the alliance and he attacked the unsuspecting boy from 2 while he tried to melt ice for drinking water. Jacelyn couldn't stay around to get slaughtered, so she ran for the northernmost glaciers. After a few hours of trudging in the searing cold snow, a package floated down to her, and it contained something that looked like it could melt the ice without having to waste matches. She thanked whoever was sponsoring her, and continued walking. Jacelyn spotted two figures fighting in the distance, and the cannon went off. The boy from 1 had been killed by the girl from his district. She didn't notice Jacelyn hiding behind a mound of snow, and for a perculiar moment, she felt like she was in a snowball fight. An innocent, meaningless snowball fight... Jacelyn pulled out the pack of poison darts that she'd acquired from the dead D4 girl and pulled the thing apart, reassembling the pieces with sharp shards of rock she'd picked up along the way. She waited until nightfall to persue the girl - they would both be weaker but Jacelyn had the power of surprise. With shaking hands, she threw the poison snow ball at the other tribute. It had the exact effect she'd hoped; the girl dismissed it as being a mere snowball, but before she realized that something was amiss, it was all over. Jacelyn had a better show than she'd expected and she'd got the poison snow ball in the tribute's perfect little O of an open mouth. It wasn't how she expected, but it had the desired effect; the girl's death. The cannon blew and Jacelyn walked away with a new weapon. It was strange to be thinking of killing other people, but with each kill to her name, it got easier. She could separate herself from it, separate herself from human emotions. She could forget the families, friends, lovers of the people she'd killed. The way she saw it, she could deal with the emotional and psychological consequences when she got out of the arena. If she never got out, she'd be dead so there was nothing she could do anyway. Three children from the outer districts were desperate. Jacelyn had been watching them for days as they unsuccessfully searched for water. Eating the ice or snow would cause a rapid drop of body heat and death would be inevitable. Always stalking in the shadows, Jacelyn set up a trap for them; a bit of water, so inviting and tempting in a hollow in the snow. The kids were rabid with thirst, but something strange happened. The girl from 9 knocked stabbed one of the other kids - presumably her ally - and knocked the other one out. She then drank from the hollow all by herself, and within two minutes, the poison had completely spread and she was dead. Jacelyn watched from afar as the stabbed boy writhed on the icy ground and the unconscious girl stirred to life. They were both so lost and confused that they didn't notice that their other ally was missing. They fought for the pocket of water, and the injured one got stabbed again. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll all kill each other... Jacelyn thought as she hid in her snow hideout. As fate would have it, the injured boy was unconscious and the girl drank the water. She seemed to realize her mistake as soon as she had the metallic taste in her mouth. Her eyes darted around and she eventually spotted dark hair. With the last of her energy, the girl tried to shake the boy awake and warn him, but she collapsed before he opened his eyes. Jacelyn took the weapons from the group and ended the boy's misery as she poured the poison into his open mouth. His breathing stopped quickly, and she wondered what the boy's family would think of this. Would they think it as an act of kindness, or did they think that she wanted to kill everbody? Did she want to kill people? Ugh, that wasn't a conversation she was willing to have with herself. Sleep didn't come that night; instead all she could think about in her snow cavern were the faces of the tributes she'd killed. There was a rustling outside her burrow, and Jacelyn tried to see what it was. It wasn't a tribute - this creature's steps were too light and dainty, and it almost sounded as if it were sliding... That's when she saw them, seven penguins, sliding down a glacier and into the freezing water. Jacelyn smiled despite herself, and somehow the penguins noticed the shift in the wind as her face muscles shifted. They all looked at her, and Jacelyn noticed the absurd shape of their beaks. It was too angular, too sharp... Mutts. More mutts. Jacelyn ran as fast as she could, hauling her many weapons and poisons on her back. The mutts caught up quickly and were soon surrounding her. She threw her weapons at them, but they dodged them. Jacelyn couldn't stop the little critters from pouncing on her and ripping at her arms and legs. It was apparant that these mutts were like the pirahnas of the arctic. A high pitched ringing swept through the arena and Jacelyn had to cover her ears. It got louder and louder, and she was writing on the ground in agony. One by one, the mutts dropped dead. The noise stopped and the headache stopped just as quickly as it had started. She looked around but couldn't find the source of the noise, and couldn't find a reason for the mutts' deaths. The days went on and Jacelyn hunted the two remaining tributes, who were in turn trying to hunt her. It was a weird circle that lead them to the lowest parts of the arena. With her poison supply running dangerously low, she was forced to use a knife. She didn't know how to use it (the D4 girl's death was a fluke) and she was basically hopeless with it. The Gamemakers seemed eager to get on with it, too, because the sun remained high in the sky longer than it ever had. They mustn't want the day wasted with kids shivering in the snow. The final showdown was coming, Jace could feel it in her bones and her stomach. She wondered what her family thought of her at this point. Did they think she had lost herself? Grimacing, the remaining tributes all saw each other for the first time when they assembled in a icy cave. Everybody seemed eager to get it over with. The others had bad injuries, but the climate had kept them cold and stopped infection. It was clear that Jacelyn had suffered the least damage, but even with that, she probably wouldn't make it out alive. A younger girl swiped at her first, ignoring her bandaged right shoulder. Jacelyn got slashed across the chest and for the first time she was grateful for the weather. Her body was numb with cold so she couldn't feel a thing. In that moment, Jacelyn and the other female tribute made a silent agreement to kill the girl with the broken shoulder. Within a few minutes, the girl was dead, but her body wasn't removed because they were in a cave. While the other girl looked around in a daze, Jacelyn quickly used the last of the poison to coat her knife. Since her 'poison snowball' had killed a girl, she figured that it would work if it got into their bloodstream. The girl came at her faster than she expected, and Jacelyn was thrown to the ground. Her knife fell from her hands and landed a few metres away. Grappling and wrestling, they rolled deeper and deeper into the cave. Her body started to heat up, and with that came the pain of the injury across her chest. It was much more serious than she thought it was. The other tribute punched her in the face, and Jacelyn fought back, but after two deep gashes to her cheek, she couldn't fight for much longer. She was almost limp when the other tribute decided to pull an electrical thing from her backpack. The horrible sound came again, but the electrical thing must have been set to a different setting, because the pain was much deeper in Jacelyn's head. She felt her brain vibrating and shaking, and she thought she was going to die. With Jacelyn unable to move, the girl (wearing protective earmuffs) poised to end her suffering quickly with a knife. And then all went black. Jacelyn woke up in a strange room, and for an embarassing amount of time she thought she was a ghost. She strolled through hallways, expecting no one to be able to see her, and was startled when someone brought her back to her bed. "What happened?" she asked the nurse. "You won," she replied. "No, no," she stuttered, which was very unlike her. The nurse gave her a little smile, shook her head and ushered her toward her mentor and stylists. Together they watched the tape, and Jacelyn gasped when she saw the icicles from the ceiling collapse. "The sonic thing that the girl from 3 used, worked too well. It shattered the ice at the top of the cave and it fell on both of you. It was absolute chaos. They didn't know whether they should go in, or whether they should keep watching and wait for signs of life. For a long time, Panem thought they didn't have a victor. Eventually they saw you breathing and they rushed you out of there. But it was still a miracle that you survived. You had severe injuries to your face - the surgeons had to reconstruct your nose cartilage - and we thought that you would have horrible brain damage." Jacelyn's mentor stuttered a little, and seemed uncomfortable to say anything. "And?" Jacelyn hurried him on. "There is a little bit of damage. Aphasia. You might be having a some trouble speaking, but you sound okay." The stuttering. She would forever have a stutter. How she found food: She watched the polar bear mutts catch fish, and she copied them. Famous for: Poisonous Snow Balls and skewering the final tribute with icicles from the ceiling. Keeps herself busy - when her hands are busy and her mind is blank, she doesn't need to think about the Games. Wants to be a teacher, not a victor.
