The wind was really getting on Flynn’s nerves. It kept blowing around the papers he had scattered all over the glass tabletop. He knit his eyebrows together and grumbled to himself as he gathered the stack of papers and sat back in the cushioned chair. Flynn stared off down the street, which was teeming with a sea of brightly colored clothing. All the typical Saturday afternoon shoppers. All sparkling, chipper, adorned in the most outrageous colors he’d ever seen. Well aside from the capital people. Those were some real crazies. But we have to be second when it came down to it. He rolled my eyes and looked back down at the records he was trying to recalculate. It looked like another bad month. The shop just kept breaking even. But they needed some profit. Flynn knew Mr. Galeon wasn’t going to live forever, and if he wanted to inherit a shop worth something, some reordering needed to be done. He heard a loud, flirtatious whistle that was all too familiar. Flynn instantly grinned and looked up, scanning the sidewalk for her. And there she was. Looking as heartbreakingly beautiful as ever. Her brown hair was down and curled, making every head turn as she passed by. And her eyes were all big and brown and make-you-want-to-know-me like everyday. And she was sporting some short little number that was all glittery and gold and was evoking some seductive hoots and hollers from a group of tools who passed by her. But of course she never gave a second glance to any of this. And they never tried anything more than a distant whistle. Cause she was Aeliana Merula. And that wasn’t a girl you could just go up to any old day of the week.
Well, aside from me that is. Flynn stood up and waved her over. She beamed and hurried her steps, of course somehow managing to walk even faster in those 4 inch heels and maintain grace. It amazed him. It really did. She came up to the table and flopped down in the chair from Flynn, looking exhausted and annoyed. He just smiled and shook his head, ”Ya know one day you’re going to learn if you don’t want all of that,” he said and motioned towards the group of guys awkwardly staring at the two, probably wondering who the hell Flynn was, ”You need to stop looking so damn good.” He winked at her and leaned forwards in his chair. Sometimes it really killed him to be her best friend. Almost as much as it killed him to be in love with her. Cause the thing about girls and guy best friends, is that they are either never gonna see you as more than a brother they can go on and on about boys to, or they are gonna be waitin around forever thinking you ain’t ever going to make a move on them so they just try to fall in love with someone else. And I’d known all along I was definitely and option one kinda guy. But looking back at the guys who were all gaping at her from afar all probably wishing they were sitting across from flippin Aeliana Merula right now, he knew he’d rather be an option one than one of them.

Aeliana smiled graciously at the cashier as she handed her the tote bag filled with her purchases. Aeliana gave a little wave as she walked out of the door and into the sunlight. The warm air stirred up her hair and she tried to manage the large mane of chocolate curls. Taking a left at the corner she walked down the main street which was filled with the afternoon shoppers. She waved to a few, said hello to others. None of which she really knew, but they knew her, well they knew her name was more like it. Walking briskly Aeliana glanced down at the small jeweled watch that hung delicately on her wrist. 12:20. Dash it all i'm late again. Flynn's going to kill me if i keep doing this. Hurrying her steps Aeliana lightly hopped down off the sidewalk and walked directly on the cobbled street to avoid the slow moving window shopper crowds. Dodging a few vehicles that moved quite quickly, Aeliana stepped back up onto the walkway just as a large hoverbus zoomed past, with dark tinted windows that made it impossible to see who was inside. But judging by the dark, unlabeled manner of the bus, Aeliana had a few guesses. It was someone important from the capital no doubt, probably a jewel tycoon here to pick up his monthly shipment. Or something else... Aeliana shuddered and turned down another street.
She didn't like to think about the secretive nature of capital-district business affairs. They were always secretive, and always covered up. Partially she knew it was because the idea of moving between districts was so prohibited and locked down. But she always had an uneasy feeling when her father went away on 'business trips'. Glancing up towards the small cafe Flynn usually was at, Aeliana searched the crowded tables for him. And then she spotted him, looking right back at her with his usual smirk and tousled mop of brown hair. He was wearing his usual white tee and black jacket that was tattered and yet he refused to let her buy him a new one. She waved a bit and hurried, seeing him laughing at her. I am always late when i go out shopping. He's never going to let me live this down! She smiled to herself.
From the left she heard a few whistles and didn't even have to glance to know who it was. Probably Garin or Dallion or some of their imbecile friends who were constantly after her. She hurried to the table and flopped into the large, overstuffed black chair and rolled her eyes at Flynn as the hollers continued. Flynn made a snarky remark about her looking too good and she had to smile at that, even through her annoyance. She shook her head, "Flynn you know as well as i do it's not my appearance that's the problem here, it's my good for nothing name!" Aeliana shot an irritated look at the troop across the road and they quickly scattered. Focusing back on Flynn she noticed his mess of papers. Scrunching up her nose she gave him a bored look, "Really Flynn? Doing business on our lunch date? Come on give it a rest for just an hour or two." Aeliana tried to give him the puppy eyes i knew he couldn't resist. He was always doing work. It broke her heart sometimes, because she knew how badly he needed for that shop to survive, but it also drove her crazy that he wouldn't accept any help from her. Because if he asked her, she'd be able to make him rich in a snap.

Flynn smirked at A as she shot the guys a dirty look. He chuckled a bit at her comment, "Hey whatever you want to believe is the problem A..." He glanced up and saw her eyeing his paperwork with distain. He just looked back down at the numbers and tried to resort it. He knew it wasn't her fault she was so outrageously spoiled. She didn't know anything about responsibility. And he didn't resent her for it, she was as nice as anyone and always feeling generous. But he did blame her father for raising another District 1 citizen who felt entitled to nothing less than the world itself. It pretty much killed my chances of ever getting her... He though to himself and dismissed the thought immediately. He'd never had a chance. Glancing up he still was baffled that they were even friends, but he knew never to expect anything more. She wasn't one to fall in love, and certainly wasn't one to marry for it.
He pushed aside his papers when he saw she was giving him 'the look'. Laughing Flynn threw his hands up in the air and said in an exasperated voice, "Okay you got me. I'll give it a rest for a bit." He saw her beam and smiled back, settling into the cushy chair as a waiter came up to the table. The man had ridiculously taught features that Flynn knew couldn't be natural, and noticed the faint gold shimmer of his tanned skin. Rolling his eyes at the stupid fad that seemed to come from the capital, Flynn looked to Aeliana and waited for her to order for him like usual. She always knew what to order at these kinda places.
She said some interesting dish names and then waved the waiter away. Clearing his throat Flynn reached for his wallet, "Alright so how much do i owe for whatever you just ordered?" He smiled at her.

Aeliana broke into a grin as Flynn put away the paperwork. She sat back in the chair and then something caught her eye across the street. A small pod of peacekeepers marched past the crowds of lucky-go-happy shoppers. She frowned at them, unsure how to feel when she saw them. Because they kept peace. They kept order. But the way they looked at people, like they were sheep who needed herding and discipline, it didn't sit right with her.
She was startled slightly when the waiter came to the table, and she quickly sat up, ordering two plates of some exotic new dishes she'd spotted earlier on the menu. She snapped the menu shut and waved the waiter off. Flynn leaned over and as soon as he asked the question she knew he'd ask, she just held up a hand and shook her head, "Oh no no no this is on me. Besides you're probably still a bit low after that outrageously expensive gift you gave me back on my birthday!" She smiled at him and rolled her eyes. He laughed. They both knew how much she adored that necklace. But they also both knew how much it'd costed him. Aeliana's laugh trailed off as the announcer box above the doorway clicked on, and everyone's attention focused on the television box as the man with wildly colored hair smiled on screen. "Hello Hello my fellow districts! I am just here to announce it is almost time for the Reaping ceremonies to begin in a few weeks! So get ready to support our honorable tributes and place your bets!" Aeliana's gaze wavered to Flynn as the man talked. He was angry, his jaw stiff and set. She knew he didn't like it. He said something always felt so wrong when the Games were about. Aeliana wasn't really sure how to feel. I mean it was always volunteers from here that seemed to go, so they knew what they were getting into. But then she remembered the tribute a few years back, a young girl about 14, and no one had volunteered to go in her place. She hadn't lasted a day.
Aeliana looked down as the tv flickered off and people began aimless chatter again. Flynn's gaze fell on her and she looked up. Both stared seriously at one another. Their last year being eligible for the Games. And neither had any intentions of entering. She tried to smile at Flynn, "Don't worry...someone would volunteer...someone always does..." She looked down again. Because she couldn't imagine what she'd do if no one did. Even worse, she couldn't imagine what she'd do if he were picked and no one volunteered.
